New Zealand Nationals Wrap Up
New Zealand Nationals: A Solid Start to the Season
After an intensive training block in Auckland, I wrapped up the New Zealand Nationals with a fourth-place finish—just off the podium. While we only managed two days of racing, the event was a valuable opportunity to get back into the rhythm of competition and test my progress post-injury.
Racing Recap
The regatta kicked off with five slalom races on the first day, followed by one more slalom and four course races on the second day. I was extremely happy with my starts in the slalom and even won a race on the first day. Heading into the second day, I was sitting in second overall before receiving a UFD (early start) in one of the slalom races. While disappointing, I was pleased with how aggressively I was pushing my starts.
In the course racing, I still need to get back into the flow of tactical decision-making, but that gives me a clear area to work on leading into Palma and Hyères.
Training Block & Expression Session
Leading up to the regatta, training was both high-quality and intense. We followed a cycle of three days on, one day off, then another three days on before resting ahead of racing. The conditions in Auckland were tricky, with light and shifty winds, but it was great to sail in a new location with a fresh group of athletes.
Although we didn’t get to race on the final day, we made the most of the conditions with an expression session before the presentation—always a fun way to wrap up an event!
What’s Next?
I now have two weeks at home, splitting my time between training, coaching for the PMSA school sailing program, working at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, and SportsPlus Physiotherapy. On February 23rd, I’ll head to Sydney for a training camp from the 24th to the 16th of March.
After the Sydney block, I’ll drive back home for a few days of work before heading overseas for my first European trip of the year. I’ll fly into Barcelona and catch the ferry across to Palma, where training will begin for the first World Cup event of the year on March 28th.
The season is ramping up, and I’m feeling excited and motivated for what’s ahead!
